Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such treatments must be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle support.
